Unifi Air review – To stay or stay away

·

Unifi Air is an alternative Unifi package for anyone who wanted a plug-and-play concept anywhere and anytime. But is Unifi Air as good as advertised by TM? Is it worth trying? Let’s see what’s in this plan, this is Unifi Air review.

Basically, Unifi Air is a wireless broadband service that is similar to P1 WiMAX (if you still remember). Their LTE band and network coverage are not shared with any telco. To find out more about Unifi Air, continue reading below.

Unifi Air wireless router info

The official wireless router provided by TM is Huawei B618 LTE CPE Wi-Fi router. The warranty period for this device is 12 months from the date of the purchase.

Huawei B618 Wifi router capable to broadcast the internet to up to 64 devices concurrently. It is pre-configured to be used with Unifi Air service only.

The router is also capable to connect to a telephone for voice services and expand LAN coverage together with a hub or a switch.

You can view or download Huawei B618 LTE CPE Wireless router quick start guide here.

Internet speed

According to Unifi official website, the average internet speed you’ll get is 20Mbps for both download and upload activities.

This is of course if you get the full network coverage. However, there are cases even with full network coverage, you might not get the full speed — based on the feedback from their currently frustrating subscribers.

LTE band and network coverage

Basically, Unifi Air is using Webe or Unifi mobile 4G LTE coverage which is Band 5 Band 40. Band 40 has a very limited network coverage, even in the town area. So, please be very careful.

To check the Unifi Air coverage, the methods are as follows:

  • Enter your address here to check instantly
  • Visit the nearest TMpoint outlet and they will check for you
  • Drop them a note via live chat at unifi.com.my or mobilecare@unifi app — Android or iOS

Final verdict

(Unfortunately, no network coverage here at my home area.)

As you already knew, I’m using Webe (now Unifi Mobile 99). And I just moved to my new house recently. Unlucky for me, I have to terminate my Unifi Fibre account because of no coverage.

I was looking for my home internet and planned to opt for Unifi Air, asking around my friends, TM staff, and a few users, finally. I learned that all of them has one thing in common:

When they started using Unifi Air, all are goods, speeds are good. After a few weeks, everything turn upside down. They no longer get the speed, and even after complaining to TM, it is just a temporary solution.

(You can read also some of the comments below.)

S, if you ask me whether worth trying Unifi Air, I’ll say it better to stay away from this plan. My advice is, to try opting for home broadband from the network that you are currently using. Confirm the coverage and do the speed test, if it is good, buy a 4G modem router.

If you have any experience with Unifi Air, please let me know in the comment below. It is worth sharing with everyone here.

Moved house to area with no available port for fibre so got Unifi Air. Good internet for two days, then next to nothing, will try for a few more weeks, if stays the same then will cancel 🙁

Hi, i just purchased Unifi Air. When I checked the coverage area, it covers my area. Same when I went to the TM point asking about the coverage, but he’s anwers was same. So when I test using speed test in my area, it’s lower then my expectations. And for me the Unifi Air same like streamyx (since before this i use streamyx). The speed are same! Even worse than streamyx i think. My average speed is between 1-5mbps. Juts like streamyx before this!!!! Sad they didn’t offer Fibre yet in my area. I really need good internet since we have online class. 😭

Hi Dayang, thank you for sharing.
I would like to suggest you to try 4G modem. Check which network has the highest speed in your area.
Buy one from online store, it’s just plug n play. Easy..

Same as me, the overall speed abe to get 20mbps only day time. After the evening or night then speed will drop to below 3mbps. Need to reset, restart it again every night but speed also not able up to above 10mbps.

Useless. I am going to terminate my Unifi air. Been suing since Feb 2020. Initially I was so happy with it but after April…. I have to reset, restart, reset, restart my router EVERYDAY!!!! useless!!! So troublesome for RM79. Big regrets.

Even their technicians are saying the same thing and not recommend using Unifi Air.

    Hi,

I think it is depends on area. My area can get average 30mbps.

    1. Barzrul Avatar

Hi, definitely. Some area may be lower than yours. The 20Mbps is the cross-states average speed.

LOUSY service for UNIFI AIR. Promise to give 100mbps but for my device is only 1.0 mbps, went to TM point and ask for termination. Staff there tried to test the speed and is only 1.0 mbps but don’t let me terminate. Say is under contract bla bla bla. Now i got streamxy on hand and also Unifi Air, due to the MCO, it delay my termination process on the Unifi Air and now I received both bill from TM. When I contact TM, they say Unifi air is not under the same department. Only live chart available but the live chart don’t even help at all. Close down the chart in the middle of our conversation! SUPER LOUSY SERVICE FROM TM!

Hi, what would the device you suggest the users to use the sim on if they take the SIM-only plan?

    1. Barzrul Avatar

Hi, I would suggest the same modem. You can buy online and it’s cheap.

What type or brand of modem the simcard unifi support? How to know which one works

        3. Barzrul Avatar

The modem must support band 40 or just buy the same modem..
