What is Unifi Mobile LTE band? What is Celcom LTE band? Look nowhere, here’s the complete list of all communication service providers or telcos and their LTE band in Malaysia.

It is important to know what LTE band they are providing in your area because the signal strength for each band is different. The good LTE signal strength is where the telco can provide a minimum of -110 dB, determined by the frequency.

What is 4G LTE

4G LTE or also known as 4G Long Term Evolution is an improvement over its predecessor but not enough to qualify as a new generation. Think of it as 3G S. Although 4G LTE has a major improvement over 3G speeds, however, it is technically not 4G.

In laymen term, the actual 4G is faster and better than 4G LTE.

Each of the LTE band is defined as for use as follows: the frequency range, with of band and the channel plan.

LTE band 1

Frequency range:1920 – 1980 UL / 2110 – 2170 DL
Width of band:60 MHz
Channel plan:FDD (Frequency Division Duplex)

LTE band 3

Frequency range:1850 – 1910 UL / 1930 – 1990 DL
Width of band:60 MHz
Channel plan:FDD (Frequency Division Duplex)

LTE band 5

Frequency range:824 – 849 UL / 869 – 894 DL
Width of band:25 MHz
Channel plan:FDD (Frequency Division Duplex)

LTE band 7

Frequency range:2500 – 2570 UL / 2620 – 2690 DL
Width of band:70 MHz
Channel plan:FDD (Frequency Division Duplex)

LTE band 20

Frequency range:832 – 862 UL / 791 – 821 DL
Width of band:30 MHz
Channel plan:FDD (Frequency Division Duplex)

LTE band 38

Frequency range:2570 – 2620 MHz
Width of band:50 MHz
Channel plan:TDD (Time Division Duplex)

LTE band 40

Frequency range:2300 – 2400 MHz
Width of band:100 MHz
Channel plan:TDD (Time Division Duplex)

FDD vs TDD LTE

FDD: Frequency Division Duplexing, often called FD, a method of carrier aggregation where data is transferred across multiple bands.

TDD: Time Division Duplexing, also TD, doesn’t aggregate different bands but instead uses time allotments on the same frequency to achieve a similar speed boost.

FDD spectrum requires pair bands, one of the uplink and one for the downlink, and TDD requires a single band as uplink and downlink are on the same frequency but time separated.

The TDD LTE bands are unpaired because the uplink and downlink share the same frequency, being time multiplexed.  Therefore, TDD LTE is popular in ISP.

Carrier Aggregation

This is a major component of 4G LTE, or more commonly referred to as LTE-A. Carrier aggregation uses multiple bands of a 4G service to speed up data transfers. Some smartphone has this setting to improve your data speed. However, it depends on the telco you are using whether can support it or not.

Conclusion

I’m using Unifi Mobile and the LTE band is Band 5 with 850 MHz frequency. The signal is slightly weak when inside building compares to the open area. So which telco and 4G LTE band you are using? How’s the signal strength? Leave your comment below.
