Unifi Home Fibre 30Mbps / Unifi

After more than a year of waiting for this service to be available in my residential area, Unifi Fibre is finally installed at my house. Previously, I was using a 100Mbps (RM129/monthly) package. You can read how I terminate Unifi without penalty here. This time, I only subscribe to 30Mbps (RM89/monthly) just to see if it is enough for my small family use.

Basically, all this time I was using U Mobile 4G broadband with Huawei B315 4G modem. They were great at first, but eventually, the speed got worst. I was getting around 14Mbps and now reduced to less than 3Mbps. Browsing and streaming videos becoming worst, nothing can be done without watching the loading animation on your device’s screen first.

Is 30Mbps enough?

This is the real question. Since this is the most basic plan, is 30Mbps download speed enough if you have more than 2 people or device using it?

To answer this question, I have run some speed tests under a few conditions. The detail of the speed test as follows:

1. Unifi Fibre 30Mbps speed test under basic usage.

Ok, here’s the internet speed test I’m getting. Take note the test was conducted with additional 2 smartphones were browsing Facebook and Tik Tok video:

  • 1 laptop conducting the speed test
  • 1 smartphone browsing Facebook video
  • 1 smartphone watching Tik Tok video

Do you notice the speed test that I still get is around 30Mbps? Obviously, the upload speed for the 30Mbps package plan is capped at 10Mbps.

2. Unifi Fibre 30Mbps speed test with home entertainment.

Here’s the internet speed while additional 52″ Samsung LCD tv playing HD movies.

  • 1 laptop conducting the speed test
  • 1 smartphone browsing Facebook video
  • 1 smartphone watching Tik Tok video
  • 1 52″ LCD tv watching Netflix movie

So, I’m still getting a similar speed. It comes to my realization that the usage is very minimal. Unless I’m watching a 4K movie from 60″ smart TV and downloading stuff from the internet, I may not utilize all 30Mbps data.

Watching TV shows or movies on Netflix uses about 1 GB of data per hour for each stream of standard definition video, and up to 3 GB per hour for each stream of HD video. Downloading and streaming consume a similar amount of data. If you are concerned with data caps or bandwidth limits, you can adjust your data usage settings by following the steps below.

Final verdict

Honestly, I think 30Mbps is more than enough for day-to-day usage for a family like mine. With this, I can avoid an additional RM40 for getting a 100Mbps (without a Unifi Plus box) package. I have more than enough data with 30Mbps, you can imagine how much money I wasted if I get 100Mbps?

So, what do you think? Which Unifi Home Fibre package plan do you opt for and why did you choose it?
