Recently, Google disabled the Backspace key button function. According to the company, the reason they came out with such decision is simply because there are too many people who lost their progress while working online by accidentally pressing backspace and leaving a page.
So, they removed the function and created an extension for those who preferred the old behavior. The extension called “Go Back With Backspace” offered by Google is a fix to restore the Backspace key as a back navigation button except if you’re writing text.
How to enable Backspace key function in Chrome
Basically, it is same like any other Chrome extension. You just need to download and install the extension into your Google Chrome browser and start using Backspace button. Here is how you can enable the Backspace button function.
I will assume you are reading this post with Google Chrome, if yes, you can click this link to go to the Chrome extension page, click on ADD TO CHROME button at the top right of the window to download and install “Go Back With Backspace” extension.
If you are using other the Google Chrome right now reading this post, please press Ctrl + Alt + F4 or click on “x” symbol at the top right of the screen to exit and come back here using Chrome.
When you finish installing the extension, if you have any open tabs, they need to be reloaded for the new changes to take effect. After that, you can start using Backspace button to go back to the previous page.
While this extension can give the backspace function, however, it can’t restore backspace on certain special pages, for example, any of the chrome:// pages such as Settings or Extensions.
