In my previous post, I had shown you how to use an old router as an access point. In case you don’t have an extra Ethernet cable, here’s how you can set up and use the old router as a Wifi extender without cable.
Depending on the area you wanted to cover, if it is big and needs a lot of devices to connect to it, use it as an access point. If it is small, you can use it as a Wifi extender which I will provide the step-by-step instruction below.

How to use an old router as a Wifi extender
- Make sure your primary router is turned on and broadcasting it’s Wifi signal.
- Log in to the old router.
- Open any internet browser.
- Enter the old router IP address in the browser address bar.
- Usually
http://192.168.0.1or read this to find router IP address. - Log in using the default username and password.
- Change it to Wireless Bridge Mode.
- This setting can be found under Wireless settings.
- It may also called Repeating Mode, Extender Mode, or Repeater Mode.
- Connect to the Wifi network created by the primary router.
- Log in using your Wifi network password.
- Save the changes.
- Place the old router anywhere where the Wifi signal is weak.
Done. Depending on where you locate the old router, the Wifi signal created by the primary is now extended by the old router. Turn on Wifi setting on your computer and connect to the Wifi network. Your Wifi signal is now should be better than before.
