Use old WhatsApp account on a new phone with a new SIM card

Learn how to use your old WhatsApp account on your new Android phone with a new SIM card or new phone number. Make sure your new SIM card is activated in a phone you wish to use, then continue with these steps to change your number.

If you have verified a new number in your new phone, but wish to continue using your old WhatsApp account, you can change your number from within WhatsApp. Start the “Change Number” process from your old phone, then complete it by verifying the number you want to use with WhatsApp in your new phone.

Note: Be aware that the “Change Number” process does not automatically transfer your chat history or media to your new phone. If you are using Android devices, read this post on how to backup, restore, or transfer WhatsApp data.

There are two basic requirements to successfully use the “Change Number” feature:

  1. The number you wish to use (the number you will change your account to) must be able to receive SMS and/or calls and have an active data connection. This is the number that you need to enter later into the new phone number box.
  2. You can see what number is verified in WhatsApp by navigating to WhatsApp > Menu Button > Settings and tapping on your profile photo.

Steps to follow on your old phone:

Step 1: Open WhatsApp.

Step 2: Go to Menu Button > Settings > Account > Change number.

Step 3: Enter the number currently verified on WhatsApp in the old phone number box.

Step 4: Enter the number you want to use in the new phone number box.

Step 5: Complete the verification process.

Step 6: Create a manual backup by going:

  • WhatsApp > Menu Button > Settings > Chats > Chat backup >Backup

Steps to follow on your new phone:

Step 1: Open WhatsApp.

Step 2: Verify the number you want to use with WhatsApp. Done!

By using the “Change Number” feature in WhatsApp, it will migrate your account information (including your profile information), groups and settings from your old phone number to your new phone number.
