Here’s how to hide WhatsApp media from Gallery in Android. Latest WhatsApp has Media Visibility features that can be turned on and off to hide media from being showed in your phone gallery.

By default, any media downloaded in WhatsApp such as images, videos, voice notes, gif, and documents will be automatically saved to your phone gallery. If you want to hide the media from showing up on your phone’s gallery, here is what you need to do.

Hide WhatsApp media from Gallery in Android

Following are new and alternative methods to show and hide WhatsApp media in Android. The Media Visibility method doesn’t apply for old media.

Use Media Visibility for new media

To stop media from all your individual chats and groups from being saved

  1. Open WhatsApp app.
  2. Tap More options (three-horizontal dots) 
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Select Chats.
  5. Turn off Media visibility.
  6. Tap OK.

To stop media from a particular individual chat or group from being saved

  1. Open WhatsApp app.
  2. Open an individual chat or group.
  3. Tap More options (three-horizontal dots).
  4. Select View contact or Group info.
    • Alternatively, tap the contact’s name or group subject.
  5. Turn off Media visibility.
  6. Tap OK.

Alternative method for old media

First, you’ll need to have a file explorer. You can download a file explorer from the Google Play. I’d recommend ES File Explorer.

  1. Using the ES File Explorer app, browse to the WhatsApp folder where the media is located.
  2. For WhatsApp image, go to
    • Internal Storage/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Images/
    • and create a file named .nomedia (the period is necessary)
  3. For WhatsApp video, go to
    • Internal Storage/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Video/
    • and create a file named .nomedia (the period is necessary)
  4. For WhatsApp gif, go to
    • Internal Storage/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Gif/
    • and create a file named .nomedia (the period is necessary)
  5. For WhatsApp document, go to
    • Internal Storage/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Documents/
    • and create a file named .nomedia (the period is necessary)
  6. For WhatsApp voice note, go to
    • Internal Storage/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Voice Notes/
    • and create a file named .nomedia (the period is necessary)
  7. Make sure all the media folder you wanted to hide from the Gallery has the file named .nomedia in it.

Note: If you wish to view your media in the phone’s gallery later, simply delete the .nomedia file from any of the folders above.

Conclusion

You can use any of the aforementioned methods to hide WhatsApp media from your phone gallery. Those applicable for all media that already downloaded and saved to your phone.

However, another alternative method is to not auto-download media in WhatsApp. This method will let you manually pick which media you want to save to your phone. If you think it is not appropriate, just don’t download it.
